Modem FAQ
RingCentral Modem Tuning Utility
Setup (Modem Tuning Utility, MTU) identifies your modem(s) and tries to
match it against RingCentral modem database. Because most modem drivers
are not 100% TAPI compliant, the database contains workarounds that can be
applicable to certain groups of modems. Once your modem is matched, it
will belong to one of known groups, so that workarounds for certain
problems will be applied. We compiled the database of over 200 modems,
those sold in stored and those bundled with PCs.

Modem Capabilities
Voice
With regard to different RingCentral products, there are 2 types of modems
- voice and data/fax. Data/fax modem used with the software such as
RingCentral Fax (or RingCentral), provide fax/data send/receive functions.
In addition to data/fax modem functionality, voice modems have
voicemail/answering machine functionality. To use it, one needs software
such as RingCentral (not RingCentral Fax).
In addition to voice capability, there are few more worth mentioning
capabilities:
Speakerphone (voice modems only)
Speakerphone modems allow you to have a speakerphone conversation in
addition to voicemail features. For this reason, voice modems without
speakerphone are typically dubbed "voicemail modems". Most voice modems
have speakerphone capability.
Caller ID
Caller ID can be used in conjunction with such RingCentral features as
Private Greeting and Local Announcement (Distinctive Prompt). Most modems
that come with PCs do not support Caller ID, although this may vary
depending on the price tag.
Handset
Handset socket lets you plug a phone handset into the modem. Handset
feature can be used with data/fax modem as a speed dialing (or dialing
using calling card) - you can dial a number or sequence of numbers using
RingCentral, then pick up the handset and have a regular phone
conversation. In addition you can use handset to record a greeting and
listen to messages with a voice modem.
Call Screening (speakerphone modems only)
Call Screening capability lets you screen voice messages as they are being
left on RingCentral answering machine.
FAX Class 1, 2, 2.0
Provides fax send/receive functionality.
This table indicates which major functions are available on
different modem/RingCentral combinations:
| Modem |
PhoneWorks 2000 |
SmartFax 2000 |
| Data/fax |

How to determine modem capabilities?
If you are not sure whether your modem has voice capability, there are
a few ways to check it:
1. Run RingCentral Modem Setup or Modem Detection and see
reported capabilities
2. Read the modem/computer specifications or contact your
modem/computer manufacturer
3. Check whether modem wave device is present in the Device Manager
(Windows 95,98,2000)
Wave device presence indicates voice capable
modem, given that correct modem driver is used:
1) Click Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel
2) Double-click System icon. You'll see System Properties dialog.
3) Select Device Manager tab.
4) Open Sound, video and game controllers branch.
A. Wave Device for Voice Modem is
listed - then wave device is installed
B. Wave Device for Voice Modem is listed and marked with a (!) -
there is a problem with it. In such case, reinstalling modem drivers
recommended
C. No Wave Device for Voice Modem listed - the modem is not voice
capable or the modem driver is installed incorrectly
4. Run Windows modem diagnostics to get information about the
modem (Windows 95,98)
1) Run Windows modem diagnostics
2) After Windows has queried the modem and received responses, note the
response on AT+FCLASS=? command. It may look like "0,1,8,80". Usually
number 8 indicates voice capability, number 80 - speakerphone capability.
NOTE: Sometimes modem driver can contain a mistake and response on
AT+FCLASS=? may be misleading.

Windows Modem Diagnostic
You can check your modem using Windows Modem Diagnostic tool. If modem
does not pass the Windows Diagnostics, RingCentral will not "see" that
modem.
NOTE: If you use modem to connect to the Internet, you will need to
disconnect before you can proceed with modem diagnostics. It is
recommended that you print out and retain this page for reference.
1. Close all communication applications.
2. Click Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel
3. Double-click Modems icon. You‘ll see Modem Properties dialog.
4. Select Diagnostics tab.
5. Highlight the COM port where your modem is installed.
6. Press More Info... You should get one of these results:
A. More Info dialog with commands and
responses.
B. Empty More Info dialog or no response.
C. Error message (typically "Can‘t Open Port").
7. If you have more than one modem in the list, repeat steps 5-6
for each modem.
Result A normally means your modem is installed and working.
Result B: (Windows queried the modem but received no response)
Check that modem is turned on and connected
properly to the computer (if external modem)
Reinstall modem driver
Result C: (Windows is not able to access the port)
Check that all communication programs are
closed
Check that modem is turned on and connected properly to the computer (if
external modem)
Reinstall modem driver
Check that there are no hardware conflicts in the Device Manager
It is essential that IRQ and I/O addresses are configured correctly
Contact your modem/computer manufacturer for further assistance in this
matter.
If you see two different modems on the same COM port, it means you have
two different drivers installed. It could be because you use different PC
card modems in your notebook PC or because different drivers and/or modems
were installed in the past. We recommend removing driver for a modem which
is not used.

Windows Dialing Properties
RingCentral uses Windows functions to dial calls. In turn, those
functions work according to settings in Windows Dialing Properies.
Windows Dialing Properties are accessible via Start > Settings >
Control Panel > Modems > Dialing Properties.
NUMBERS ARE FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES.
YOUR NUMBERS MAY BE DIFFERENT.
RingCentral does not "know" about area and country codes, dialing "1" in
front of a phone number, about calling cards, call waiting tone and other
settings from Dialing Properties. Solution for most dialing problems lies
in Windows Dialing Properties dialog. If you have problems dialing calls,
check the following items in Dialing Properties first:
Location: First of all you need to make sure your location is set
correctly. If you are located in 650 area code, but your location setting
indicates 415 area code, all calls to 650 area code will be dialed as long
distance, because Windows "thinks" you are in 415 area code. If you are
located in UK, but your location is set to USA, all calls to USA will not
be dialed correctly for the same reason.
Call Waiting: If you do not have the call waiting on your phone
line, but your Dialing Properties instruct Windows to dial *70 to
disable call waiting, you will most likely get an operator message as soon
as Windows (or RingCentral) dials *70. Uncheck this box if you do
not have call waiting
Outside Line Access: If you're behind a PBX, and you need
RingCentral to dial 9 before the phone number, set 9 in the
fields To access an outside line.
Area Code Rules: Windows 98 provides advanced Area Code Rules in
Dialing Properties to specify how non-standard calls should be dialed.
Read this if you cannot place calls to the phone numbers that require
dialing a "1" plus area code, even to the numbers within the same area
code, OR you cannot place calls to local phone numbers that require
dialing an area code, but do not require dialing "1" before:
Example 1
You are located in 650 area code and you need to dial the number
1-650-555-1212
In Area Code Rules:
- enable Always dial the area code checkbox
- in Dial 1 for the numbers with the following prefixes, create new
entry 555.
NUMBERS ARE FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES.
YOUR NUMBERS MAY BE DIFFERENT.
All calls to 650 555 xxxx will be dialed as 1 650 555 xxxx now. All
other calls to 650 area code will be dialed as 650 xxx xxxx
End of Example 1
Example 2
You are located in 650 area code and you need to dial the number
415-555-1212
In Area Code Rules:
- in When calling to other area codes, create new entry 415.

NUMBERS ARE FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES.
YOUR NUMBERS MAY BE DIFFERENT.
All calls to 415 area code will be dialed as 415 xxx xxxx now.
End of Example 2
Advanced Area Code Rules: If your location has rules that are more
complicated than Windows Dialing Properties can handle, some hints are
required to obtain needed results. To learn them please go to the
Knowledge Base and view corresponding articles.
Area Code Rules in Windows 95: There are none, therefore some hints
are also required. To learn them please go to the Knowledge Base and view
corresponding articles.

Modem FAQ
What is a voice modem?
A voice modem is a data/fax modem plus additional voice chip which, in
combination with software such as RingCentral, delivers you a
functionality of a digital answering machine and voicemail. Most voice
modems also have speakerphone function.
What is a modem driver?
Modem driver is a software that needs to be installed in Windows to make
modem work. A modem driver typically contains command sequences that are
sent to modem by Windows to do different tasks (e.g. dial a number,
record, play, enable speakerphone and so forth). For soft modems, modem
driver also includes a software component to emulate certain modem
functions.
What is a soft modem?
Soft modem (controllerless modem) contains minimum hardware on its board.
Instead, it employs a software component (also referred to as a driver)
which uses host CPU to emulate modem functions. This component "talks" to
modem hardware in a proprietary way.
What is a modem chipset?
Modem chipset is usually named after the manufacturer of the main chip on
the modem. Various modems from different manufacturers can have the same
modem chipset. If a communication application works on a modem with a
certain chipset, it will most likely work on another modem with the same
chipset. The well known chip makers include Lucent, Conexant/Rockwell,
TI(USR), Motorola, Cirrus Logic, PCtel.
What is "TAPI compliant"?
This is a technical jargon meaning that in order to work with the modem,
various communication applications can use TAPI - Microsoft‘s standard
"language" to work with various modem hardware. Applications using TAPI
are also called TAPI compliant. RingCentral is one of them.
